Mr. Shirley seems to have overlooked the fact that the Nude Girls are essentially a punk band who rely heavily on their chaotic playing for that franetic energy that everyone gets off on. His clean production here serves only to highlight the band's poor performance and lack of imagination - sapping the soul. His time would've been better spent concentrating on the arrangements of songs, making better use of Arno's ability to write great catchphrases, finding different sounds and more exciting grooves. The single 'Giant Love Affair' starts off so beautifully, only to meander off into nothingness, and the great chorus in 'X' is betrayed by the predictable guitar riff and arbitrary use of effects. What could've been an awesome string arrangement in 'Baseball' ends up sounding like an over the top soundtrack just through lack of direction. Some tender moments. Some hectic bits. 'Blue Eyes' is still a great song, but in my opinion Surpass The Powers ends up sounding like a really well produced demo.
