By far Tony Cox's best album to date - Matabele Ants has real emotion, something sorely lacking in previous albums. Tony swapped the sterile studio for friend Nib's lounge and dropped the big technical arrangements in favor of just himself on acoustic guitar and Barry van Zyl on percussion - the result is beautiful. I've noticed that both he and long time companion Steve Newman have been leaning more and more towards the hypnotic trance within African and Eastern music - giving more space to their compositions, letting them breathe a little. A single note on slide as opposed to a whole slide solo. I have the song 'Anthole' on repeat - fucking awesome!
